I'm a real Lea Michele when it comes to books, but the public library is one of my favorite things about living in DC. Obviously, it's the best place for a bookworm, but it's also a wonderful resource for small business owners, parents, creatives, and anyone looking to connect with their community or build up their skills—for free.
💻 Digital Resources
Libby - A mobile app that allows you to check out eBooks, audiobooks, and online publications (newspapers, magazines).
Kanopy - Streaming service offering films, TV shows, educational videos and documentaries.
LinkedIn Learning - Online courses to help build your professional skills and enhance your career development.
🛠 In-Person Services You Didn’t Know You Needed
Printing (and in color!) - I love being able to email a document or hop on one of their computers to print out shipping labels or an important document I need.
Study Rooms and Meeting Spaces - Need a place to work or host a gathering? You can rent study rooms and meeting spaces at the library.
Classes - Classes range from literacy skills, digital certifications, to professional development.
Equipment Rental - Some libraries allow patrons to borrow equipment ranging from laptops to sewing machines, cameras, podcasting kits, and even repair tools—perfect for DIYers without the upfront cost.
👨👩👧👦 Community & Family Resources
Children’s Programs and Resources - For my mamas & papas! Your library may offer story time events, after-school programs, and resources aimed at kids and teens.
Community Events - Ranging from puzzle swaps, book clubs, craft nights, libraries try to build a connections in your community.
Even if you don’t consider yourself a reader, your local library is basically a free resource to learning, entertainment, and community. If you haven’t used your library card lately, this is your sign to dust it off!
DMV Resources:
DC Public Library Services - Includes passport help, Books from Birth program, a maker's lab, legal support services, and more!
Montgomery County Library Resources - MoCo lays out their resources by categories and highlights their most popular services.
Prince George's County Library Community Resources - This collection reflects questions frequently asked at our libraries and serves to connect the community with resources outside the library's walls.
Fairfax County Library Events - The calendar includes language events, author talks, and activities for kids.
Arlington County Library Services - I like how this breaks down services by audience including, kids by age group, artists, job seekers, makers, and of course, readers.
